In early medieval times Bruges was one of the most important trading hubs of the European continent, at least till gradual silting deprived it of the direct access to the open sea. In later ages, for centuries it lost its position and splendor looted in times of religious schisms, revolutions and Napoleonic wars. Today, thanks to many people, who through years engaged in its careful restoration, the historic town of Bruges is on the absolute must-see list, while traveling Europe.
