Locronan is a small locality, and formally a village, located in Brittany, in the Finistère department of northwestern France. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful villages in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France), and for good reason – it delights with its well-preserved medieval granite architecture, cobbled streets, and unique atmosphere.
The history of Locronan dates back to Celtic times, but the town gained particular significance in the 6th century when, according to local tradition, Saint Ronan, an Irish monk and hermit, settled here. His presence marked the beginning of the settlement’s development as a place of worship, and around his grave, the Gothic Church of Saint Ronan was later built in the 15th century, which today serves as the town’s center. Locronan owes its name to Saint Ronan – Lok Ronan in Breton means place of Ronan.
In the Middle Ages, Locronan gained significance as a center for sail production for the French navy and trading ships. Located near seaports, the town benefited from the development of maritime trade and acquired wealth, which translated into architectural development – including elegant, granite stone houses.
