Königssee is one of the best-known lakes in Bavaria and one of the highlights of Berchtesgaden National Park. Surrounded by steep limestone cliffs and forested mountain slopes, it is famous for its remarkably clear, emerald-green water. Most visitors come here for the electric boat cruises that depart from Schönau am Königssee and travel towards St. Bartholomew’s Church and Salet. Along the way, the boats pause beneath the towering rock walls, where the crew demonstrates the lake’s famous natural echo – one of Königssee’s best-known traditions.
That cruise was one of the experiences we had been looking forward to the most. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. Although it rained for much of the day, it was not the rain that cancelled our plans. Strong winds made it unsafe for the boats to operate, and all departures were suspended. We arrived at the landing stage expecting to buy our tickets, only to discover that there would be no cruises that day.
As a result, every photograph in this gallery was taken from the shore around the landing stage at Schönau am Königssee. Photographing in the rain was far from easy, and more than once I had to put the camera away as the shower became heavier. Yet the landscape was so striking that it hardly seemed to matter. The vivid colour of the water, the mountains disappearing into low cloud and the constantly changing light made even the view from the shore unforgettable.
I still hope to return one day and finally see Königssee from the water. But sometimes travel photography is also about accepting what nature gives you. Even without the boat trip, this was one of the most memorable places I visited in Bavaria.
