Bodenmais is a small town in the Bavarian Forest, close to the Czech border and at the foot of Großer Arber, the region’s highest mountain. It is best known for its long tradition of glassmaking, which has shaped the local economy and identity for centuries. Today, visitors can still explore one of the area’s best-known glassworks, where historic equipment stands alongside modern workshops and a large exhibition of handcrafted glass.
My visit to Bodenmais was only a short stop during a longer journey through Bavaria. The main reason for coming here was the glassworks. Although the tour itself was brief, it offered an interesting glimpse into traditional glass production. I also enjoyed browsing the showroom, filled with beautifully crafted glass objects, including impressive sports trophies that have been produced here.
Before leaving, I slipped away for a quick walk through the town centre. Bodenmais felt quiet, tidy and welcoming, with a few attractive streets that reflect the character of a typical Bavarian Forest town. During my visit, both the parish church and the main square were undergoing renovation, so I could only catch a glimpse of the town rather than see it in its full charm. Even so, the short walk offered a pleasant impression of Bodenmais and provided a few photographs that capture the atmosphere of this peaceful mountain town.
