Alberobello is a small town located in the Puglia (Apulia) region of southern Italy, in the province of Bari, about 50 kilometers southeast of Bari. It is renowned for its unique and picturesque trulli, traditional limestone dwellings. The town dates back to the 14th century when the area was first settled. However, the trulli that make the town famous were primarily constructed in the 17th century as way to evade taxes. At the time, the Kingdom of Naples imposed high taxes on permanent structures. By constructing their homes without mortar, the residents could quickly dismantle their buildings when tax inspectors were nearby, thus avoiding the taxes. Trulli are small, round houses built from local limestone, with distinctive conical roofs made of stacked stone (layers of limestone slabs called chiancarelle) without the use of mortar (a technique that dates back to prehistoric times). These structures are noted for their whitewashed walls and often feature symbolic designs painted on the roofs, which can include crosses, hearts, stars, or other religious and astrological symbols.
