Matera is one of the most fascinating cities in Italy, renowned for its extraordinary history, unique architecture, and striking landscape. Located in the southern region of Basilicata, Matera is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with a history spanning at least 9,000 years.

The most iconic feature of Matera is the Sassi – ancient districts of the city made up of cave dwellings, houses, and churches carved into the rock. These stone structures have been inhabited for centuries. The caves, first used during the Palaeolithic era, offered ideal shelter from harsh weather conditions. Over time, many of these homes were built one on top of another, with some integrating natural caves. The flat rooftops of the buildings often serve as pathways for residents on higher levels.

In the mid-20th century, Matera was regarded as one of Italy’s poorest cities. Life in the Sassi was difficult, with poor living conditions, prompting the government to relocate the inhabitants to modern housing outside the old town. Starting in the 1950s, the restoration and revitalisation of the Sassi began, and today Matera is one of Italy’s most charming tourist destinations. Visitors can even spend the night in one of these historic cave homes, with interiors ranging from simple to highly luxurious.

Matera has also gained global fame as a film location. It was notably featured in Mel Gibson’s film “The Passion of the Christ” (2004), where the ancient Sassi served as the perfect backdrop for recreating Jerusalem. More recently, the city was prominently featured in the James Bond film “No Time to Die” (2021), where thrilling car chases took place through Matera’s narrow, winding streets. These films have brought international recognition to the city.
