The Rijksmuseum, located in Amsterdam, is the Netherlands’ most renowned art museum and a key cultural landmark. Established in 1800 and initially housed in The Hague, it moved to Amsterdam in 1808, settling into its current building, designed by Pierre Cuypers, in 1885. The museum’s stunning Gothic and Renaissance revival architecture makes it a striking feature in the city.

Home to an extensive collection of Dutch art and history, the Rijksmuseum boasts over 8,000 objects on display from its total collection of 1 million pieces. Its most famous works include masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, such as Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch”, Vermeer’s “The Milkmaid”, and “The Merry Family” by Jan Steen. These paintings offer a glimpse into the 17th century, a period of great wealth and cultural achievement in the Netherlands.

The museum’s galleries are organised chronologically, allowing visitors to journey through Dutch history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. In addition to paintings, the Rijksmuseum also displays sculptures, decorative arts, prints, and historical artefacts. The Asian Pavilion houses a significant collection of Asian art, including works from China, Japan, and Indonesia.

The Gallery of Honour is a must-see, showcasing the highlights of Dutch painting in an impressive hall that leads to Rembrandt’s famous work, “The Night Watch”. The Rijksmuseum’s Library is another gem, being one of the most important art history libraries in the world, offering extensive resources for researchers.

In recent years, the museum underwent a ten-year renovation, completed in 2013, which restored and modernised the building while respecting its original design. This renovation has been praised for revitalising the museum and enhancing the visitor experience.
