MADRID

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain, officially designated as such in 1561 by King Philip II. Though once a relatively modest town, its central location made it an ideal seat for the Spanish Empire’s growing power. Over the centuries, Madrid has evolved into a dynamic political, cultural, and economic hub. Today, it offers visitors a unique blend of royal history, world-class art, and everyday Spanish life. Among the city’s most iconic landmarks are the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, and the lively Plaza Mayor – each one reflecting a piece of Madrid’s rich heritage.

Art lovers will find much to admire in Madrid’s renowned museums, especially the Prado, home to masterpieces by Goya, Velázquez, and El Greco. Unfortunately, photography wasn’t allowed during my visit – something I personally found a bit disappointing, although I understand the reasoning. In an era of constant selfies and camera flashes, preserving the atmosphere and protecting the artwork becomes a priority. The Royal Palace had similar rules, which, while understandable, still left me wishing I could take a few snapshots to remember the splendour.

A more playful and accessible symbol of the city can be found in Puerta del Sol – the statue of El Oso y el Madroño (the Bear and the Strawberry Tree), which also appears on Madrid’s coat of arms, harks back to the city’s medieval past and has become a beloved meeting point.

Madrid also offers modern attractions that reveal a different side of the city. I had the chance to visit the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home of Real Madrid. Even if you’re not a football fan, it’s hard not to be impressed by the sheer scale of the stadium and the high-tech fan zone, which feels more like an interactive museum-meets-theme park for football enthusiasts. Another highlight of the trip was Mercado de San Miguel, a vibrant and stylish indoor market where traditional flavours meet a contemporary food culture. From tapas and Iberian ham to seafood and local wines, it’s the perfect place to take a break, grab a bite, and soak in the atmosphere of everyday Madrid.

Below, you’ll find my notes from this short trip to Madrid, along with a photo gallery – though not all images are included here; some appear directly within the notes. /JMA/
