Mont Saint-Michel Abbey, located on a rocky islet in Normandy, France, is a historical monument dating back to the Middle Ages. Legend has it that it was founded in the 8th century after the Archangel Michael appeared to Bishop Aubert of Avranches, instructing him to build a church on the rocky isle. The abbey evolved over time, becoming a Benedictine monastery during the Carolingian era. It is well-known for its unique location above the bay and for its mix of Norman and Gothic architecture. The strategic position of Mont Saint-Michel Abbey led it to be a center of conflicts as well as a place of pilgrimage and study. It survived sieges during the Hundred Years’ War and later became a symbol of national identity. The religious community was disbanded during the French Revolution, and the abbey was used as a prison until 1863. Interest in its historical and religious significance was revived in the 19th century, leading to restoration efforts initiated by influential figures such as Victor Hugo. Restoration work continued into the 20th century to preserve its medieval origins and stabilize the structure against coastal weather and the passage of time.
